Welcome to the Hull and East Riding Branch of the BCSS

Hull & East Riding Branch was formed in 2018 by the merger of the long-established Hull and Bridlington branches. We pride ourselves on being a friendly and welcoming social group with some really good growers of cacti & succulents in our ranks.

Monthly meetings on the first (or sometimes second) Friday of the month usually attract around 20 people. We try to cater for everyone with a varied programme of topics at these meetings. Typically, speakers may focus on a specific group of plants, an aspect of plants in cultivation or travelogues to habitats where cacti & succulents naturally occur. See our events page for further details. Talks are usually illustrated with slides (increasingly digital presentations) or sometimes with plants and demonstrations. Speakers may bring sales plants and members often distribute their spare plants.

There is a monthly table show that contributes to a friendly competition each year to see who can accumulate the most points.

The meeting room in St Nicholas Church Hall is open from around 7pm, with the meetings starting 7.30pm. As a guide, the meetings sometimes go on until 10pm, but might finish earlier.

Entrance to our meetings costs 60p and this includes tea / coffee and biscuits in the interval; you can also contribute to the cost of hiring the hall and speaker expenses by buying a raffle ticket.

There is off street parking at St Nicholas Church Hall, this is immediately in front of the hall. The meeting room is at ground floor level as are the toilet facilities including disabled toilets. See our contact us page for details of how to find us.

Our August meeting switches from a Friday evening to a Sunday and the opportunity to visit some members greenhouses.

In recent years we’ve put on displays and sold plants as part of open days at Thwaite Botanical Gardens in Cottingham and at Wassand Hall, near Hornsea; this is something we aim to continue to share our love of cacti and succulents.

You will be most welcome if you choose to come along to our meetings.
